Michelle B. Griffin:
Welcome! I'm your host, Michelle B. Griffin. As an author, speaker, and certified personal brand and PR strategist, I'm here to empower you to get visible, build your personal brand, and own your lane as a visible brand authority and thought leader in your space. I'm super excited you're here. Now, let's get going with today's show.
Welcome, everyone, to this week's episode. I'm your host, Michelle B. Griffin. Today, we’re diving into a topic that’s incredibly important—reinvention. Maybe you’ve been thinking about it, or even feeling it. My guest today is all about helping us reinvent ourselves so we can do the work we’re created to do.
I’m thrilled to welcome Lisa McGuire, founder and creator of the Diff'rence Center, to the show. Oh, and a special shoutout—it’s her birthday today! Lisa, happy birthday and welcome to the show.
Lisa McGuire:
Thank you so much, Michelle! I’m excited to be here, and what a wonderful way to cap off the day—spending it with you and your audience.
Michelle:
I don’t think I’ve ever had a guest join on their birthday, so I truly appreciate you being here! For those who haven’t met you yet, Lisa, please introduce yourself. Tell us about what you do, and then we’ll dive into today’s topic of reinvention.
Lisa:
Thank you, Michelle. If you take a look at my LinkedIn headline, I call myself a Next Steps Reinvention Strategist and Culture Enthusiast. I help people figure out their next steps—whether it’s making a quarter turn in their business, navigating a job transition, or even stepping into retirement, which can be an intimidating word for many. I guide them in aligning these steps with their purpose.
Michelle:
I love that. And before we wrap up later, we’ll make sure to talk about your amazing podcast, Your Passion, Purpose, and Personal Brand, which you’ve been hosting for three years now. It aligns beautifully with today’s topic.
Lisa, I can relate to the idea of reinvention. Back in 2015, I felt this burning desire to do more and be more. For me, it bubbled up gradually, and before I knew it, I was stuck for five years trying to find my way out. I wish I had found someone like you during that time! Let’s start by defining what reinvention really means. How do we know when it’s time to take that step?
Lisa:
Great question, Michelle. I believe many of us began thinking about reinvention during the pandemic when we had more time to reflect on our lives. It was a chance to ask, “What am I really doing? Who am I working for? What’s my purpose?” Families were home, systems we relied on began to break down, and suddenly, the way we lived and worked was called into question.
For many, reinvention starts with reimagining—dreaming of new possibilities. It’s less daunting than jumping straight into a complete overhaul. I like to say we have the chance to reimagine ourselves anew every day.
Michelle:
That’s such a beautiful way to frame it. A fresh start every day—full of choice and possibility. But for some, the word "reinvention" feels intimidating, like they have to abandon who they are. You’ve mentioned you use a softer term, “reimagine.” Could you explain how you approach this?
Lisa:
Absolutely. The term “reinvention” can feel heavy, as if we’re erasing our identity. Instead, I focus on reimagining—a gentler, step-by-step process. Rarely does someone wake up and say, “I want to reinvent myself.” But reimagining allows us to dream without the pressure of immediate action.
Michelle:
I love that approach. For me, it wasn’t until I got quiet and started looking inward that I began finding answers. At first, I was stuck on the “professional hamster wheel,” chasing external solutions like courses and credentials. But the real work begins internally.
Lisa:
Exactly. The answers are often within us, but they’re buried under noise—society’s expectations, technology, and external pressures. Taking time to get quiet is essential. Whether it’s through self-reflection, trusted feedback, or even personality assessments, the goal is to rediscover your core identity—not who you’ve been told to be, but who you really are.
Michelle:
That resonates deeply. I’ve also found it helpful to look for “clues” in my life—where I feel flow versus friction. Those moments guide us to what truly lights us up.
Lisa:
Yes! Paying attention to those moments is key. I also encourage people to look back at what they loved doing as children. Often, those passions leave clues about our purpose.
Michelle:
Such powerful insights, Lisa. After we begin this internal work of reimagining, what’s the next step?
Lisa:
The next step is to test and take action. Put yourself out there. Whether it’s posting on LinkedIn, starting conversations, or trying new things, the answers often emerge through action.
Michelle:
Absolutely. For me, putting myself out there on LinkedIn was transformative. It clarified my purpose and helped me connect with others.
Lisa:
Exactly. It’s about experimenting and learning as you go. From there, you can design the future version of yourself. Who do you want to be? How do you want to show up? Taking small, intentional steps—like decluttering your space—can create momentum.
Michelle:
I couldn’t agree more. Reinvention—or reimagination—is an ongoing evolution. Lisa, this conversation has been incredible. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and insights.
Lisa:
Thank you, Michelle. It’s been an honor to join you, especially on my birthday!
Michelle:
And happy birthday again! For everyone listening, you can connect with Lisa on LinkedIn or take her quiz at lisamcguire.com/quiz. We’ll include the link in the show notes.
Thank you all for tuning in. Remember, you have a brand to build, a message to share, and people to impact. Keep putting yourself out there, and I’ll see you next time. Take care!
