Do you feel capable, motivated, and full of potential - but suddenly unsure of your direction?

If clarity feels harder to access lately, this episode will help you understand why - and what to do instead of forcing yourself forward.

Many of us were taught to rely on external authority for stability and direction:
parents, teachers, bosses, relationships, roles, systems, and identities that told us who to be and how to succeed.

But when those external structures stop working - through career changes, relationship shifts, identity transitions, or life disruptions - our system doesn’t experience it as “growth.”

It experiences it as instability.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Why clarity and decision-making suddenly feel blocked
  • How external authority shaped your sense of direction and safety
  • Why losing a role, relationship, or structure can trigger overwhelm
  • How information overload makes decisions harder, not easier
  • Why pushing harder, planning more, or “fixing your mindset” backfires
  • The real reason capable, action-oriented people feel stuck
  • Why this isn’t laziness, failure, or lack of discipline
  • How inner authority replaces external authority and why this matters now
  • What it actually takes to regain direction without losing yourself

This is not motivational content.
And it’s not about forcing clarity or becoming someone new.

It’s about understanding how your system works, why the old map no longer fits, and how to rebuild direction from within - in a way that’s grounded, aligned, and sustainable.

SPEAKER_00:

So many people are experiencing external authority or external identities are collapsing faster than our nervous system was designed to handle. Where we feel like we need to do something to regain our balance, if you like, but we don't know how. And if you're feeling overwhelmed right now, it could be that you've got these goals that you're trying to achieve, and you know you're capable, you're intelligent, and you're full of potential, but there's something blocking you and you don't know why. It probably is this. And no, it doesn't mean that you're falling behind. It actually means something completely different, and this podcast will really help you understand how to move forward. For most of our lives, stability didn't come from within us. It came from parent figures, teachers, bosses, companies, institutions, relationships, certain roles that we take on, being a mother or being a father or being a husband or wife, or a particular identity or a role in a company. Systems that told us who we are. So for instance, if you meet someone at a party and they say, Oh, tell me about yourself or who are you, sometimes we would say our name and what we do and things like that, because that's how we have identified with ourselves. That's what we aim for, how we measure success in society. But all those structures have acted like an external authority to you, telling you how to be, it's outside of you. And it leads you to becoming who you are. It tells you this is what you need to achieve. It's like a map, it orientates us, it's like a GPS, it reduces uncertainty. We feel karma through having that map or that outside authority or external authority because it helps our nervous system calm down and also our brain, it thrives on being certain. So if someone else gives us a map, there's almost well, I didn't do it wrong, there's a real safety in that. And that's what gives us and our nervous system a sense of order. But increasingly, a lot of us are going through shifts and those structures are no longer reliable. It might be that you always thought you're gonna get into a relationship and have children and settle down. Maybe that relationship didn't work out, but you do have children. But that map is no longer reliable because now you're a single parent. And so when systems that your body has relied on for predictability start to fail, like you lose your job or you fall out of love of your job, or you've fallen out of love in a relationship. Your nervous system doesn't see this as a philosophical change. It reads it as instability and it can be really quite difficult. It's a horrible and difficult period to actually navigate because of your nervous system. You just start to feel this panic. What am I going to do? etc. From a biological perspective, this response is completely normal. It's normal, there's nothing wrong. Your nervous system has evolved to function best when authority is clear. We've been told what to do at school, etc. And when roles are stable, we feel like we're safer. Even if that role is of somebody who's toxic to us, we still feel more stable in that environment. Because future outcomes feel less unpredictable and they feel more predictable, better the devil you know. But when those signals disappear, when those structures disappear, be it a relationship, be it a boss, the way you look at the country you live in, or you know that you're the brain shifts into survival mode. And survival mode has a very specific cost. It shuts down future-oriented thinking. That's why you might feel anxious without knowing why. You can't think straight or problem solve like you used to. You might get restless, but you still feel exhausted, but you don't feel like you've done much. Mentally you're really, really busy, but yet you can't decide. And this is the other thing I really want to bring up is we're having like lots of us are having breakdowns of our outside authority or external authority, but we're overloaded with information as well. So there's so much information. So you you might have a lot of knowledge, but you still can't decide because there's just too much now. There's just it's too much for us all to make decisions these days. So we're overwhelmed by options. Even if you want to go out and buy a pen, for instance, there's a huge variety of pens, and sometimes it's overwhelming to know which one is best for me. And so it's normal and understandable that we can sometimes get disconnected from our sense of direction. And if we've got goals that we've created last week or the week before, it could be that you might be doubting that direction now. Is it even possible? And it might be small doubts, might not be big, but it's so easy to start doubting our sense of direction and because we're disconnected from it. And it isn't because you're doing something wrong, it's because your system is trying to protect you in an environment that it no longer really understands because there's not that safety there of someone telling us what to do. And so many of us, like me, when I was growing up, I just wanted some guru to tell me what to do, and I just wanted to do it and be successful. It was like if I could just find someone, a guru, to tell me this is what you need to do, and then I would just do it and I would work really hard and follow those rules, and at least I know I would get the outcome. But that isn't the case. I don't think there is a guru out there that's going to tell you exactly what's right for you. This is the point where most people instinctively try and fix the problem by trying to do more, like they can go around doing, doing, or they go into shutdown because it's just too much. They think if I push harder, I plan better, or I think my way through and I have a strong mindset, clarity will come back. But neuroscience and trauma research are very clear on this. When the nervous system is dysregulated, forcing solutions actually deepens stuckness. So this is why what used to work might not be working for you anymore. Now, it's more that external authority is no longer working for you for some reason, and your nervous system is dysregulated, and forcing solutions can actually deepen that feeling of being stuck because there's this feeling of not being sure. So this is the science behind what's happening. And the problem is you can't think your way out of a state your body doesn't feel safe in. You can think and think, it's just gonna feel you're gonna feel even more stuck over time. That's why people can stay stuck in this space for years and years. Not because they're not trying, they're working really hard and they know they have the potential. It's just that they are missing that process of how to get unstuck because they don't understand that the nervous system is dysregulated and there's a biology to this because you are a human being after all, and you do have a biology. So you can't think your way out of a state that your body doesn't feel safe in. So we need to get reconnected. Otherwise, what happens is people either overfunction, they're constantly fixing, planning, researching, they're in that firefighting mode, or they're underfunctioning, they're freeze, they're procrastinating or shutting down. And neither creates real movement. So it doesn't really matter if you're really working hard and you're not getting the results, or you're not working hard and you're not getting the results. There's no real movement forward. And it's not a motivation problem, it's not a laziness problem, or there's something missing problem, it's definitely not a mindset problem. Your mind is probably working really hard. It's an embodiment problem. We now understand that decision making does not happen in the brain alone. It involves the nervous system, the body, the gut, the heart. We know this because there's neurons in the gut and the heart, and our nervous system connects the gut, the heart, and the brain. You need all of these areas to be able to make a decision about how you want to move forward. So, clarity, if you really want to be clear on where you're heading and what you really want, it's actually a whole system experience. So when your system is overloaded or misaligned, you don't lose intelligence, you actually lose access. So it's not that you're not smart enough to know what to do or that you're missing something. It's that you're losing access, you're disconnected to maybe the body, the gut, the heart. It's like you're numbed to it. And that is why you can sense you know what you're saying is correct, and that you have all the logic and the knowledge behind it. And maybe you even know what you need to do. You've got the strategies, you've got the plans, and it might be that you either still feel completely unable to move forward, or you feel like you're doing the work, but there's something missing, it's just not connecting with maybe your clients, maybe your marketing, whatever it is. It's not failure, it's just that maybe you're not fully online, it's physiology. Many people interpret this phase as I've lost myself. But more often, what's actually happening is you didn't lose yourself, you've lost the external authority that was controlling your life. Okay? So really think about this. If you're someone that feels like I'm lost, I don't really know what to do with my life. Did you lose external authority that was controlling your life? Maybe it was a toxic environment, maybe it was a toxic type of job or relationship, or it's like now you don't have something telling you what you need to do, controlling you. This is extremely common after rigid systems that have defined your worth or that were defining your value in some way. And when those structures disappear, there's a moment where identity feels empty. But that emptiness isn't loss, it's actually space. Space where inner authority can finally emerge back. If you know how to work with your nervous system instead of against it, you can allow yourself to come back and reconnect to yourself so that you are your own inner authority rather than having or needing external authority to run your life. Because you've got to understand that we have all grown up to be, and we've all been conditioned to be following an external authority. We have to follow maybe a culture, we're told what to do, and the different rules that we have to follow. So this phase is especially brutal if you're someone who's capable, you're driven, you're ambitious, you value progress, you want results. Um maybe there's this niggling thing. You know you're meant to do something, but you don't know what. There's this void. You need to act, and you're someone that acts and does things. You want to take action moving forward, but you can't find that internal decision making, that internal, yes, this is it, I know what I want. And if this phase isn't understood properly, people can stay here for years. And it's a real shame because you get people that are so incredibly meant to do something, they didn't know how to move forward. They were forcing movement and then blaming themselves as if they're not capable or something. But the solution isn't more effort, the solution is alignment. Here's the truth: most people were never taught. We were trained from childhood to outsource authority. What we want, what we eat, what's safe, what's not safe, what success looks like, who to listen to, who to follow, so that we are good. But when the outside world becomes unreliable, and most of us get to a certain age where we realize they were unreliable. And for many people, it has. So many people we feel like the outside world is being unreliable. Stability has to come from somewhere else. It can't come from outside because it's unreliable. You have no choice but to turn within. And that means learning how to regulate your nervous system because that's how you can learn to trust and believe in yourself again, to trust in the internal signals within yourself, to align your mind, your emotions, and body, make decisions without needing external permission, knowing you don't need that external validation. And this is not self-improvement, this is inner authority training. How do I take control of my life? Because you need to. If you're listening to this and thinking, I know I've had enough, I don't want to stay in this in-between state anymore. I try and make decisions, but I just don't know how and what it is that I want. Making those decisions is harder, or I think it's this, and then I try that for a little while, and then I realize this doesn't work. But I really want results now. I want real movement now. I've created a masterclass specifically for this transition. It'll help you understand what's happening in your nervous system, how to stop forcing clarity, and rebuild inner authority and start making aligned decisions again. This isn't motivational content, it's not about making you inspired. It's practical, it's embodied, and it's all about moving your life forward so it's results where you're actually doing different things because you're regulating your nervous system, you're allowing yourself to come back in and making those alignments so that you can make the right decisions for yourself and then take the right actions from there. You can download the masterclass and I'll put a link in the description for you. If the outside world is no longer reliable, then learning to trust yourself isn't optional anymore. It's essential. You're gonna be okay. Sending you so much love till next time.
